Email Verification

What is Email Verification?

Email verification is a service that identifies whether an email address is valid and checks whether it belongs to a real person. The main purpose of email verification is to ensure that a real person with a valid email address will receive your sent email.

In other words, email verification helps clean up your email lists to improve deliverability, identifies possible bounces and spam traps, and helps you reach your actual customers.

Why Do You Need to Verify Your Emails?

Email is the most preferred and economical method of sending messages and communicating with the rest of the world. Apart from being economical, it is very fast — the recipient receives emails instantly.

However, there are various reasons that can prevent an email from reaching its proper receiver. The individual may have changed their email address, the domain may no longer be valid, or the company the email belongs to may have closed.

When you send emails to non-existing addresses, your sender IPs risk being blacklisted, or your email sending account may be blockedby your ESP. Email verification improves your sender reputation and helps you achieve better delivery results — so you don't waste precious time and money on non-existing IDs.

How Does Email Verification Work?

EmailVer's email verification process works in 3 stages:

How Email Verification Works

3-stage verification pipeline

Stage 01

Syntax & Duplicate Check

Format validation & deduplication

Stage 02

Domain & Disposable Check

MX record & temp domain detection

Stage 03

SMTP Verification

Mailbox existence confirmation

Stage 1 — Duplicate & Syntax Check

In the first stage we remove all duplicate IDs and check for improper syntax (e.g. jane@examplecom). The syntax checker validates whether the email format is correct — no spaces, commas, and all the @s, dots, and domain extensions are in the right place.

Stage 2 — Domain & Disposable Email Check

We verify MX records to confirm the domain actually exists and can receive email. Then we check whether the domain belongs to a temporary/disposable email provider — filtering out addresses that will expire within hours.

Stage 3 — SMTP Verification (Valid, Invalid & Catch-All)

In the most sophisticated stage, we ping each email address with an EHLO message and await the response from the recipient's mail server. The server response confirms whether the email address exists and is active.

What is Email List Scrubbing?

Email list scrubbing means removing people who will never interact with or open your emails. Scrubbing reduces list size while improving overall success — a classic example of quality over quantity.

By removing non-engaged subscribers (anyone who hasn't engaged in 90 days, for example), you focus on people who actually interact, open, click, or reply to your campaigns. Keeping your lists hygienic should be an integral part of your email marketing.

How to Scrub Your Email List

  • Segment your list into active and inactive data
  • Clean inactive emails through a list cleaning tool
  • Send re-engagement campaigns to your subscribers
  • Finally, remove inactive subscribers from your list

When Should You Scrub Your Email List?

  • A sudden drop in your open or click-through rate on recent campaigns
  • An unusually high number of unsubscribes
  • An increase in spam complaints on your email campaigns

How Can You Improve Your List Hygiene?

List Hygiene Checklist

Use an email list verifier
Remove inactive subscribers
Segment rather than delete
Avoid spam filters & traps

Use an email list verifier— Don't continuously send emails to invalid addresses. It hurts your delivery metrics, especially delivery rates. An email list verifier automatically checks every address before sending.

Remove inactive subscribers— Subscribers who aren't opening your messages are not valuable. If they forget why you're emailing them, they may mark your messages as spam.

Segment rather than delete— If you're sending emails daily, try weekly or monthly instead. Add relevant offers and personalize the message to re-engage your audience.

Avoid spam filters and spam traps — Spam filters can trigger because of your email content (subject line, links). List cleaning removes spam traps that silently damage deliverability.

Is Your Bounce Rate Higher Than Average?

Your email bounce rate tells you the percentage of emails that were not delivered. Undelivered emails fall into two categories: soft bounces (temporary) and hard bounces (permanent).

Bounce Rate Thresholds

< 2%

Healthy

2–5%

Warning

> 5%

Critical

What is an Acceptable Email Bounce Rate?

The accepted threshold is between 2–5%. For every 100 emails you send, 2–5 may be returned. If your bounce rate exceeds 5%, you need to take immediate steps and clean your list. A temporary spike may resolve itself, but consistent high rates require action.

How Many Spam Complaints Are You Getting?

Spam complaints happen even to good marketers sending to opt-in lists. Research shows that 27% of deliverability issues are caused by excessive spam complaints.

A complaint rate of 0.1–0.3% is considered acceptable among good senders, with a maximum of 0.5%. Beyond that threshold, your ESP may suspend your account. While zero complaints isn't realistic, you can maintain rates at acceptable levels with proper list hygiene.

Why is Your Email Marketing Not Producing Results?

Email marketing has the highest ROIof every available marketing technique. If your returns are low, it's likely because nobody is receiving your emails — they're bouncing or landing in spam.

  • Clean your list and keep it up to date
  • Use a reply-to address — a no-reply address signals spam to ESPs
  • Segment your lists so each customer receives personalized, relevant content
  • Track your campaigns — monitor opens, click-throughs, bounces, and unsubscribes

86% of organizations rank email as their primary communication channel. Email verification plays a critical role in protecting your sender reputation and ensuring emails reach the inbox.

How Email Verification API Can Help

A simple but powerful Email Validation & Verification API helps lower your bounce rates. Integrate validation APIs with your app or website to detect and catch incorrect email addresses at the point of entry.

Bulk Email Verification API

Verify complete lists in bulk directly from your application. No need to export and import data to our platform — process everything through the API. You can also check your remaining credit balance.

How to Verify an Email Address Without Sending an Email

  1. Syntax Check — Verify the email is structured correctly (local-part@domain) with valid characters
  2. Search with Google — Check if the email address appears on any public website or listing
  3. Social media lookup — Search social media platforms for the email owner's profile
  4. Domain Check (MX records) — Verify the domain has valid MX records indicating a working inbox
  5. Use EmailVer — Verify your entire list at once without sending any emails, saving time and effort

What Are the Different Email Verification Tools?

Multiple email verification tools are available to remove bad emails from your list. The core features — bounce removal, temporary email detection, and spam trap identification — are common across services. The differences lie in accuracy, speed, support, and pricing.

Why EmailVer Stands Out

  • Anti-graylisting technology — When encountering greylisting from inbox providers, we wait 15–20 minutes and retry, reducing unknowns and improving accuracy

  • Blazing fast — Verify millions of emails within hours
  • Most affordable — At $67 per 100k emails, one of the lowest prices in the market
